What a Bengal kitten costs in New York

Expect $1,800 to $3,500 for a pet-quality SBT Bengal from a registered cattery that health tests, with silvers, charcoals and strong rosetting at the upper end. Buyers around Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, Syracuse tend to see the higher end of that range, simply because demand in metro areas outruns the number of serious breeders.

Anything advertised well below $1,500 deserves real suspicion. PK-Def and PRA-b testing, cardiologist echoes for HCM, registration, vaccinations and twelve weeks of raising a litter underfoot cost more than that before the breeder earns a cent.

Are Bengals legal in New York?

This one needs care. Bengals four generations or more from their wild ancestor (SBT) are generally treated as domestic cats across most of New York — but New York City has historically applied its own, much stricter rules to Bengals regardless of generation. If you live in one of the five boroughs, confirm your situation before you pay a deposit.

Buying from a breeder outside New York

Perfectly normal, and often the right call. Good Bengal breeders are uncommon enough that most buyers work with someone out of state — either driving to collect, or using a flight nanny who accompanies the kitten in the cabin. Never accept a kitten shipped as unaccompanied cargo.

Before you send any money

1. Get a live video call, and ask for something unplanned — have them pick the kitten up, or show you the room it lives in.
2. Ask for PK-Def and PRA-b results for both parents, and the date of the last HCM echo.
3. Read the contract before paying, and check it has a health guarantee and a return-to-breeder clause.
4. Pay by credit card. Never Zelle, Cash App, wire or gift cards — those are irreversible by design, which is exactly why scams demand them.
